This prestigious prize, named in memory of Professor James Cooper, was inaugurated in 2000. It is awarded annually by the UK-based Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) to Doctoral graduates of UK or Irish universities for “research that makes an original contribution to the field and is directly relevant to the management of the end-to-end supply chain”. The 2013 award was presented during the recent Logistics Research Network (LRN) conference in Birmingham. During the presentation, Prof. Michael Browne, LRN Chairman, commended Dr. Sweeney for the quality of his work. He commented: “The judges were particularly impressed with the rigour of his thesis and the manner in which multiple research methods were used in combination. Ed’s exploration of the links between theory and practice is very much in line with LRN’s mission”. He noted that Ed is well known in the UK logistics academic community for his work in supply chain education and research, having chaired the 2004 LRN annual conference in Dublin and that he is a regular contributor to LRN and other CILT activities in the UK and in Ireland.

The award of the James Cooper Memorial Cup to Edward represents a “double-double”. One of his supervisors, Prof. David Grant, won the award for 2003 and now becomes a winner both as a student and a supervisor. Edward was part of the supervisory team of the 2010 winner, Dr. Pietro Evangelista, and now also becomes a winner as both a supervisor and a student!
