Last week NITL was delighted to host a visit by Dr. Elvira Maeso González of the University of Málaga.

The University of Málaga is quite a young institution its decree having been formally approved in 1972. However, it can trace its origins back to the 16th Century. More recently, the Casa de Enseñanza de Pilotaje, Lenguas Vivas y Comercio (School of Navigation, Modern Languages and Commerce) was established in 1846 and later became an integral part of the University. Today the University has in the region of 40,000 students and 2,500 academic staff. It is one of the fundamental pillars of Málaga’s so-called “productive triangle”, formed by the airport and the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía (Andalusia Technological Park), which is connected to the University by a continuous flow of ideas, highly qualified professionals and advanced technologies.

Dr. Maeso González is Director of the University’s Department of Transport Management and Professor of Organisation. She has particular interests in intermodal transport operations and the planning and management of integrated logistics systems. NITL looks forward to working with her over the coming years, particularly in its research into the impact of transport and logistics activities on environmental sustainability. During her recent visit, she met with representatives from one of NITL’s longstanding collaborators at the University of Naples “Federico II”. Dr. Maeso González will join NITL’s network of collaborators but the specific logistics and supply chain challenges currently being faced by peripheral EU regions – including Ireland, southern Spain and southern Italy – will be the focus of her work over the next three months.
