During the 2010/2011 academic year NITL participated in an innovative postgraduate programme funded by the Government of Regione Campania in Italy. As part of this initiative, NITL collaborated with its partners at the University of Naples “Parthenope” in the design and development of an international Masters programme in the area of freight transport and supply chain management (SCM). In the early part of 2011, 15 Italian students spent three months at DIT and completed nine modules from NITL’s comprehensive portfolio of postgraduate logistics/SCM programmes. These students received their degrees from the University of Naples “Parthenope” in December 2011.

This programme has now resulted in a major new book that was published recently by McGraw-Hill. Supply Chain Management: Perspectives, Issues and Cases (ISBN: 978-88-386-7323-8) was edited by Renato Passaro and Antonio Thomas from the University of Naples “Parthenope” and provides fresh insights into many important SCM issues. It comprises chapters that were written by a range of individuals who contributed to the success of the collaborative Masters programme. These include Italian academics and industry partners, as well as four chapters that were contributed by NITL lecturers. One particularly innovative feature of the book is that a number of chapters are based on outstanding dissertation work that was carried out by the students as part of their work in Italy and Ireland.

Following the recent announcement the book’s publication, Dr. Edward Sweeney of NITL commented that “this marks another milestone in the development of relationships with our academic and other partners in Naples and the Campania region of southern Italy. It is particularly gratifying to see a number of chapters based on research that was carried out by the students during the programme. This is testament to the quality of this cohort of students and the high level of application and diligence they showed during their studies”. Edward’s chapter – entitled “The People Dimension in Logistics and Supply Chain Management – its Role and Importance” can be downloaded at  http://arrow.dit.ie/nitlbk/29/.
